Carl E. Gulbrandsen

Carl E. Gulbrandsen is managing director of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), the patenting and licensing organization of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also managing director of the WiCell Research Institute, a nonprofit subsidiary of WARF that supports and advances research on human embryonic stem cells.

Gulbrandsen holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, as well as a doctorate in physiology from the UW-Madison and a law degree from the UW Law School. He is admitted to practice law in the State of Wisconsin and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

From 1981 until 1992, Gulbrandsen was in the private practice of law. His practice concentrated on intellectual property, with a specialty in patent prosecution and litigation. In 1992, he was named general counsel of Lunar Corporation, a medical device company, and Bone Care International, a pharmaceutical company, both located in Madison, Wisconsin, and both based on technology arising from research conducted at the UW-Madison.

Gulbrandsen has been with WARF since 1997. Prior to becoming the foundation’s managing director in 1999, he served as director of patents and licensing. He is also an adjunct professor in the UW-Madison Department of Physiology and serves on the faculty of the university’s Masters of Science in Biotechnology program.

Gulbrandsen is a member of the Licensing Executive Society, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Wisconsin State Bar and the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Wisconsin Technology Council and of the Patent Public Advisory Council for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
